Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a method used for the production of oil and gas by fracturing and opening rock or rock formations. The hydraulic fracturing process generally involves the following steps:

Drilling the Well: Initially, a well targeting the oil or gas reservoir is drilled. This well can usually progress horizontally.

Well Casing Reinforcement: Steel pipes or well casings are used to reinforce the well wall while drilling. This is done to ensure the stability of the well and reduce environmental risks.

Injection of Fracturing Fluid: A mixture of water, sand, and chemical additives is injected into the well. This mixture is called “fracturing fluid.” The fracturing fluid is pumped into the well at high pressure to fracture the rock formation and release hydrocarbons.

Rock Fracturing and Crack Opening: The high pressure of the fracturing fluid causes cracks to form in the rocks. These cracks create fractures that allow hydrocarbons to flow more freely.

Transportation of Sand and Keeping the Cracks Open: Solid sand particles are added to the fracturing fluid. These particles help keep the rock fractures open, allowing hydrocarbons to flow more freely.

Hydraulic fracturing offers significant potential for energy production, but it can also raise environmental and social concerns. Issues such as water consumption, pollution, earthquake risks, and others are frequently debated as environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing practices. Therefore, the use of hydraulic fracturing technology has often been a subject of serious discussion among the public, environmental groups, and regulatory agencies.
